Deborah Barrett is a writer of fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry, a lover of nature, and an amateur photographer.

As a professor in the practice at Rice University in Houston, she teaches creative writing and literature. She has a PhD in English from Rice and a BA and MA in English from the University of Houston.  She has published scholarly articles on literature, communication, and leadership, and a textbook, Leadership Communication (McGraw-Hill). 

Currently, Deborah is working on publishing her novel and is participating in the Colossus Circle of Women Poets. 

She publishes most of her creative nonfiction essays as Deborah Burch-Lavis.
